Animule On My Game

A flier for the Oh Messy Life radio program consisting of hand written text on top of a black and white photograph of Patty Hearst robbing a bank.

Oh Messy Life – December 8, 2022 Show Notes

Track 1: People Like Us & Ergo Phizmiz – Social Folk Dance

One of my favorite radio memories was a night when we had People Like Us and Wobbly down to the station for a live performance. As it happened, that night there was an event upstairs in the large auditorium featuring a discussion between Ira Glass and Terry Gross. I always loved the juxtaposition of those public radio luminaries speaking in the giant auditorium while at the same time, down in the basement, two absolute geniuses of sample art were pushing the boundaries of the radio medium.

Track 2: The Button Collective – Click Go the Shears

I heard this Australian band via a recommendation on Mastodon.

Track 3: Bonny Light Horseman – Sweetbread

From the KZSU A-File.

Track 4: Orlando Julius with The Heliocentrics – Love Thy Neighbour

Found via Bandcamp promo email.

Track 5: Squirrel Nut Zippers – Animule Ball

I saw that they were coming through town and thought I’d check in and see what they had been up to lately.

Track 6: Linda Martell – Bad Case Of The Blues

I learned via Mastodon that Linda Martell was the first black woman country musician to play the Grand Old Opry.

Track 7: Irreversible Entanglements – Open the Gates

Fun opening track from this album in the KZSU A-File.

Track 8: Rent Romus and Heikki Koskinen – excerpts from Itkuja Suite, innvocations on lament

Local musician Rent Romus is currently raising funds (three days left!) to complete this project, a suite of music mixing jazz with Finnish lament music.

Track 9: Little Simz – Point and Kill

A fellow squirrel watcher recommended this one on Mastodon.

Track 10: The Selecter – On My Radio

Ran across a recent cover of this song, but then decided to go with the original.

Track 11: Grand Invincible – Born On A Rock

From the recently released album The Result. I’ve been walking around all week with “I’m Luke Sick Baby, I was born on a rock” stuck in my head on infinite loop.

Track 12: bran(…)pos – Theme 4 XX LAB

From a fun recently released little EP, Fool of Wonder.

Track 13: Las Sucias – Maldito Sufrimiento

From their ¡Salte del Medio! release, recorded over Life Changing Ministries in Oakland.

Track 14: Judas Brutus – Game Insignificant

Judas Brutus is a new collaboration between Roughneck Jihad, Architect, and Drasar Monumental.

Track 15: Edip Akbayram – I Will Not Forgive You

Another discovery via Bandcamp promo email.

Track 16: Lithics – Nature Observation Poem

A band I found a few years ago doing a deep dive on modern day post punk.
