Oh Messy Life – December 22, 2022 Show Notes
Track 1: Nina Simone – I Hold No Grudge
Devon E. Levins at WFMU has an amazing interview with Angelo Badalamenti in his archives. In the interview Badalamenti tells a story of starting out in the music business, writing a song, and deciding to walk over to the offices of Nina Simone to sell her the song.
Track 2: Angelo Badalamenti – Audrey’s Dance
I was completely obsessed with Twin Peaks when it was airing. Something about this mix of teenage heartbreak, quirky soap-opera drama, and undecipherable mysteries captivated me. The music was no small part of it. I made a mix tape of my favorite tracks to play over and over. Listening so many years later, I’m still transfixed.
Track 3: Angelo Badalamenti – A Jog In The Park
From the sound track to the film A Late Quartet.
Track 4: Angelo Badalamenti – La Clé De La Victoire
I must confess, it wasn’t until I was researching this radio show that I remembered Badalamenti did the soundtrack for City of Lost Children.
Track 5: Angelo Badalamenti – Pink Room
Memories of renting Fire Walk With Me and playing it in the basement of my college dorm. As I played it more and more people stopped to watch, so many that we started it again from the beginning immediately after it ended. Watching it back to back like that did reveal one or two mysteries.
Track 6: Angelo Badalamenti – Dark Space Low
From the soundtrack to the 2017 Twin Peaks season three.
Track 7: Angelo Badalamenti – Alvin’s Theme
From the movie The Straight Story, about a man riding a lawn-mower across Iowa and Wisconsin.
Track 8: Julee Cruise – Falling
I listened to all of the Julie Cruise Twin Peaks tracks, but this is still the one that most completely pulls me back in time every time I hear it.
Track 9: Cristobal Tapia de Veer – Renaissance
From Season Two of the White Lotus television show.
Track 10: ConcernedApe – Mermaid Song
From the soundtrack to the computer game, Stardew Valley, a heartwarming game about farming and community. Somehow the previous track reminded me of this one, so I thought, why not?
Track 11: Sun’s Signature – Golden Air
Another track from this newish project from Elizabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins.
Track 12: Rokia Koné & Jacknife Lee – Dunden
Found this one via Bandcamp promo email.
Track 13: Lucrecia Dalt – Bochinche
¡Ay! might be my favorite album of 2022.
Track 14: Ana Tijoux – Creo En Ti con Juanito Ayala
Checking out a little more from Ana Tijoux
Track 15: 545 – Pidgin Hole
Another track from the 545 808 album.
Track 16: Frank Marchi – Idriss Beatdown
Frank’s bass playing is the backbone of so many west bay power violence bands, from Agents of Satan to Kalmex and the Riff Merchants and many many more. I found this track on Frank’s Soundcloud.
Track 17: Vertacyn Arc Materializer – Hurry Up And End, Hell
Vertacyn Arc Materializer played on Wednesday Night Live back in 2019.
Track 18: Adeem the Artist – Redneck, Unread Hicks
A beautiful reminder not to make assumptions about someone based on where they happen to live.
