Waxie’s Red Toothpick

A flier for the Oh Messy Life radio program consisting of handwritten text on top of a photograph of people playing bagpipes.

Oh Messy Life – December 7, 2023 Show Notes

Track 1: The Pogues – Waxie’s Dargle

I first learned about The Pogues from a campus band back in college, Mortal Wombat II, who played a variety of Pogues covers in their sets. Rest in Peace Shane!

Track 2: tokumeikibou – 第一巻

I think I saw someone on Mastodon calling this band a combination of J-Pop and math rock, so I had to check them out.

Track 3: hyperculte – Distress

Going back for another track from their album La Pangée. Love those vocals.

Track 4: Vanishing Twin – Afternoon X

The title track from their new album, Afternoon X.

Track 5: Skinny Pelembe – Hardly the Same Snake

I think I heard about this one on Mastodon as well. Also it’s a very fun name to say: “Skinny Pelembe”

Track 6: Sofia Kourtesis – Estación Esperanza (feat. Manu Chao)

Not quite sure where I found this one, actually.

Track 7: Killing Joke – Turn To Red

It absolutely blows my mind that this track is from 1979. It sounds so amazing. Rest in Peace Geordie Walker.

Track 8: Cosimo Damiano, Mai Mai Mai – Sind (Rework) feat. Faraualla & Ars Ludi

I’ve been digging a bunch of stuff from Maple Death Records lately.

Track 9: Aesop Rock – Kyanite Toothpick (feat. Hanni El Khatib)

Still so many awesome tracks left to play on the Integrated Tech Solutions album.

Track 10: The Circling Sun – Silver

This just seemed to fit rhythmically after the Aesop Rock track.

Track 11: Sombat Simla – Lom Phat Prow

From the album, Master of Bamboo Mouth Organ: Sombat Simla.

Track 12: Khun Narin – Thang Jai Thang Jao

Checking out the second album, II, from Khun Narin from a few years back.

Track 13: Muireann Bradley – Richland Woman Blues

I found this one via Bandcamp promo email.

Track 14: The Pogues – The Broad Majestic Shannon

Sending the show off with one more from the Pogues! Foibles also posted this clip of Alex Cox’s Straight To Hell in memory of Shane MacGowan.
